Starting from zero

OKX had strong trading and structured products, but few yield products that balanced simplicity, transparency and competitive returns. BTC Yield+ was a new structured yield product: people earn yield on their BTC through a predefined strategy, with no active trading or derivatives knowledge needed, and a BTC-native product could appeal to experienced and less-active users alike.

There was no existing UX, mental model or design precedent to build on. The challenge wasn’t a new feature. It was designing trust for a product where people commit meaningful capital.

Sole designer, 0→1

  • Shaping the core user experience and mental model for the product
  • Designing the full lifecycle: entry, commitment, monitoring and exit
  • Partnering with product and engineering to align UX with product mechanics
  • Iterating after launch to support scale and growing complexity

Build trust before driving adoption

  • Clearly communicate how yield is generated
  • Set accurate expectations around risk and returns
  • Stay simple enough for broad adoption, and robust enough to scale
  • Support people committing significant capital, not just experimenting

Tested with 16 people

Once the main flows were designed, we tested them in person with 16 internal users. Three screens drew the most feedback and drove the next round.

Shipped landing page: historical APR, a historical performance card, My subscriptions with live balance, and a sticky Subscribe and Redeem bar.
First landing page: product explainer and holdings, with the redeem action low on the page.

The full landing page scrolls as you move down the page. Drag to compare.

Landing screen

People wanted historical APRs to judge past performance. The redeem button was too hidden, and the copy didn’t make clear what they would earn.

  • Added a historical performance card showing past APRs
  • Moved redeem into a sticky bottom bar so it is always in reach
  • Added My subscriptions with live balance and earnings
  • Rewrote the copy around the product, which cut people’s questions
Shipped subscription screen: one large amount field, estimated daily interest and historical APR, left-aligned.
First subscription screen: tenor selector, centred returns block and several collapsed sections.

Drag to compare.

Subscription screen

A product logic change meant people no longer chose a tenor. The centred returns block made eyes jump around a screen that was otherwise left-aligned.

  • Removed the tenor selector after the product logic change
  • Enlarged the amount input, the primary action on the screen
  • Left-aligned returns, with more context on estimated interest
  • Moved non-essential detail behind an info icon
Shipped redemption screen: a single amount input, styled to match the subscription screen.
First redemption screen: a list of bundles to choose from before redeeming.

Drag to compare.

Redemption screen

People first had to pick which bundle to redeem. A product logic change consolidated all funds into one bundle, which removed that step entirely.

  • Removed bundle selection: all funds now sit in one bundle
  • People type the amount they want to redeem directly
  • Matched the layout to the subscription screen

Designed to be understood

A cautious BTC holder asks questions in a predictable order. The landing page answers them in that order, top to bottom, before it asks for anything.

The full BTC Yield+ landing page: promise and risk labels, historical APR, performance chart, holdings, why BTC Yield+, how it works, FAQ, and a sticky Subscribe and Redeem bar.
  1. What is it, and how risky?

The name, a one-line promise and the risk labels (Conservative, Principal-protected) come before anything else.

  2. What could I earn?

The historical average APR, labelled as reference only, never as a promise.

  3. Has it delivered?

A performance chart shows the track record before the page asks for anything.

  4. What do I already have?

Holdings, available balance and total earnings, so returning users see their position first.

  5. Why this?

Three plain reasons: daily BTC rewards, principal protection and stable returns.

  6. How does it work?

Four steps from subscribing to redeeming, with redemption timing and fee stated before anyone subscribes.

  7. What if…?

The FAQ covers risk, withdrawals, when interest starts and how the APR is calculated.

  8. Ready?

Subscribe and Redeem stay pinned to the bottom of the screen, one tap away at every point.

Nothing moves until it’s understood

Committing capital is the riskiest moment, so the amount and review screens carry the most care.

  • Costs before commitmentRedemption timing and fee appear on the landing page, on the amount screen and again at review. Nobody finds out after the fact.
  • Estimates look like estimatesInterest is shown as estimated daily interest, and returns as historical APR, marked for reference only.
  • Money has a visible pathReview shows where funds come from, split by account, and where a redemption lands, with an estimated arrival time.
  • Exact amounts“You’ll subscribe” and “You’ll receive” state the exact BTC figure, after fees, before confirming.
  • Irreversible steps are namedA checkbox spells out that confirming can’t be undone, and repeats the redemption terms in plain words.
  • A clear endingEvery flow ends by saying what happens next, with the order details one tap away.
Subscription review: the exact amount, source of funds by account, historical APR, redemption period and two acknowledgement checkboxes.Redemption review: the exact amount received after fees, where funds go, estimated arrival time and acknowledgement checkboxes.
